Supporting Business Growth
Yorkshire’s Energy & Clean Tech Economy
Yorkshire’s energy and clean technology sector is a swiftly expanding pillar of the regional economy. In West Yorkshire alone, low carbon and environmental goods and services generated over £8.1 billion in economic value in 2023, and are expected to grow by more than a third by 2026. The industry supports more than 53,000 jobs locally – around 2.1 per cent of the workforce – and features rapid sales growth in renewable energy, alternative fuels, wind, geothermal, and heat pump technologies. Across Yorkshire and the Humber, clean energy employers number 8,500 today, with potential to more than double to 20,500 by 2035, driven largely by wind and bioenergy.
The region’s energy-from-waste facilities also deliver high-impact results. One operator alone contributes nearly £120 million in GVA to Yorkshire’s economy, supports hundreds of well-paid jobs, and generates substantial emissions reductions, highlighting clean tech’s local economic and environmental benefits. With the national clean energy sector growing three times faster than the wider economy and attracting significant investment, Yorkshire stands at the forefront of the green economy, positioned to drive energy security, high-value job creation, and sustainable regional growth.
Why Growth Yorkshire Matters
Growth Yorkshire helps energy and clean technology businesses secure funding, access innovation support and build the skills they need to grow. We connect organisations with finance and advisory services, enabling them to invest in new technologies and scale more quickly.
We also support firms in areas such as marketing, workforce development and governance, ensuring they can compete in a fast-moving sector. By linking businesses into regional clean energy networks and industry partnerships, we help amplify their impact and create stronger connections across the green economy.
